Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC)

Policy
IAEC serves as an independent representative and competent body to review the scientific
and ethical merits of research proposals (Form B) and approve the experiments on small
animals as per the compliance with the Animal Welfare Act 1992 (ACT), guidelines of
CPCSEA New Delhi.

Objectives

  • Review and approval of protocols received from Principal investigators for proposed
    use
  • To ensure the technical appropriateness and ethical aspects of the research protocol
    for experiment on the small animals
  • Provide advice to the researchers on all aspects of the welfare and safety of researcher
    as well animal care.
  • To assure quality maintenance and welfare of animals used in laboratory studies while
    conducting research.

IAEC Requirements:

    • As per the new amendment of CPCSEA, the duration of appointment on the IAEC
      will be 5 years (coinciding with renewal of registration).
    • The committee will be reconstituted at the time of renewal of registration and at
      least half of the members will be replaced.
    • The Chairperson of the IAEC shall be responsible for conducting at least two
      meeting of IAEC and annual animal house infection in a calendar year with the
      help of the Member Secretary of IAEC.
    • The minimum of six members shall be required to form quorum of the IAEC
      meetings.
